The use of chemicals for facial rejuvenation has been explored since ancient times. A chemical peel is simply a chemical solution applied to the skin designed to give a deeper exfoliation by peeling off the damaged upper layer of skin to reveal new, revitalised skin underneath.
Chemical peels are important for skin rejuvenation. Their popularity is related to their versatility and relative simplicity. These peels are classified as superficial, medium, and deep according to the depth of penetration of the peeling solution. The results of the procedure depend on the chemical used and its concentration, skin preparation, method of application, contact time and skin condition. The depth of the peel determines the magnitude of the results, but also the patient’s inconvenience during and after the procedure, the healing time and the rate of potential side effects.
HOW DO CHEMICAL PEELS WORK?
Chemical peeling is a proven and effective method for skin rejuvenation, as long as you visit a trained professional in this field. A sound knowledge of skin anatomy and wound healing is important for understanding the principles of chemical peeling.
Pre-conditioning the skin prior to a peel will improve skin health as well as accelerate post-peel healing. Furthermore, using retinol or retinoids consistently before a peel will help strengthen the skin to improve barrier function. If your skin is weak or dehydrated, it is not ready to be peeled.
An active solution is applied to the surface of the skin, which causes the superficial layer to peel off. Superficial peels penetrate to various levels of the epidermis. The treatment exposes a new layer of healthy undamaged skin, resulting in a smoother texture and a more even skin tone.
CHEMICAL PEEL BENEFITS
Peels are one of the most effective ways to treat signs of ageing, discoloration and UV damage. Commonly used for the face, chemical peels can also be used on the body such as the neck and hands.
Peels go beyond exfoliation to provide dermal and epidermal stimulation that help stabilise skin functions and support skin renewal. Designed to improve and correct a wide range of skin disorders, each treatment helps to achieve a specific skincare goal for every patient’s skin condition, lifestyle and skin health objective.
Medical-strength skin peels can help to improve skin radiance and luminosity, and can be used to correct and reduce a wide range of skin concerns:
Un-even skin pigmentation
Rough or uneven skin texture
Acne and acne scars
Fine lines and wrinkles
Superficial blood vessel damage
WHO ARE PEELS FOR?
Both men and women benefit medically and aesthetically from chemical peels. Skin peels are suitable for various areas, including: face, eyelids, neck, décolletage, torso, hands, arms and legs. A peel can be used as a single treatment or may be repeated as often as required as part of a personalised skin restoration and optimisation programme. Skin specialist Tara Abdullah will advise of the appropriate treatment during consultation.
DIFFERENT PEEL TYPES
There are three basic levels of intensity when it comes to peels: superficial, medium and deep. The intensity of the peel is decided at your consultation, and is dependent upon: what improvement you want to see, the downtime you can afford to take and the level of irritation you can tolerate. Chemical peels do sting but do not cause an extensive amount of pain. It is a discomfort but you should not worry about experiencing unbearable levels of pain.
The strength of the peel solution affects the depth of the treatment and the degree of exfoliation:
SUPERFICIAL (MILD) PEELS
These peels penetrate and gently exfoliate the outer layer of skin (the epidermis). They are suitable for mild skin discoloration, rough skin and for general skin rejuvenation. Your skin may feel tight for a couple of hours afterwards but will return to normal following this. Due to the mildness of this peel, regular treatment is needed to maintain its effects.
A mild peel will instantly refresh the skin, cleanse pores, soften fine lines, improve skin texture and superficial pigmentary changes such as age spots.
This peel can penetrate the outer and middle layers of skin to remove damaged skin cells. This type of peel can be used to improve skin pigmentation such as freckles and age spots in addition to moderate skin discoloration, fine lines and wrinkle. It also can be used to smooth rough skin and treat skin growths such as actinic keratosis (chicken skin). With a medium intensity peel, you may experience a slight stinging sensation when the peel is applied. Your skin may also go slightly brown or red in the days following the treatment and can take up to 6 weeks to return to normal. Although, you only need to return every 6 – 12 months to maintain its benefits.
These peels will resurface sun-damaged skin, improve on texture roughness, large pores, dullness, fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring and most pigmentation disorders.
This level of intensity is the most aggressive treatment that targets the deeper layers of skin. You can expect to see a dramatic improvement in your skin with this peel as it can help remove tougher skin problems such as melasma, deeper wrinkles and scars. This peel can cause some discomfort and visible peeling for a few days. Swelling can last up to 2 weeks, whilst skin redness can take up to 3 months to diminish. However, it all depends on the individual and your skin’s level of tolerance. Note that this peel can only be performed once.
These deeper treatments are effective in improving on pronounced hyperpigmentation, deep acne scarring, thickened and sun-damaged skin as well as resistant lines and wrinkles.

The Ossential Stimulator Peel is designed to exfoliate the skin by stimulating cellular turnover to improve skin tone, texture and clarity. And the best part is that there is no downtime, peeling or redness afterwards; just glowing, healthy skin. This peel is affectionately known as the “Red Carpet Peel” owing to the number of celebrities that avail of it before they have to look picture perfect for red carpet events, and can’t afford to hide away with the redness of flaking that some strong peels cause. Ossential is gentle on the skin but strong enough to make a visible difference, brightening and refreshing the face for a youthful, dewy look. This peel contains 3 different acids to exfoliate your skin and promote cell turnover; with 10% Salicylic Acid, 10% Lactic Acid and 10% Citric Acid. These are known as AHA or Alpha Hydroxy acids – they dissolve dead skin cells and give a great exfoliation to the upper layers of the skin. The salicylic acid works on oily, acne prone skin, and the citric acid gives the skin a healthy glow. Just one peel will see results, but maximum benefits can be achieved with a series of three to four peels carried out at two week intervals.
